Light, pigment and heat
Hair removal lasers emit light that pigment in the hair absorbs. The heat disables the follicle while cooling and careful settings protect the skin.
Wavelengths and skin tone
Common hair removal wavelengths include alexandrite (755 nm), diode (around 800–810 nm) and Nd:YAG (1064 nm). Longer wavelengths are generally considered safer for deeper skin tones because less energy is absorbed by the skin's own pigment.
Questions to ask
- Which device will be used on my skin, and why?
- What cooling or comfort features does it have?
- Do you recommend a test spot for me?
